ICMS NA Venture Challenge North America 2016

The ICMS Venture Challenge (IVEC) was a three-day event: kickstarting with an intense, creative problem-solving challenge focusing on a general prompt, and followed up with professional development opportunities such as a networking session. In order for impactful, incremental and radical innovations to occur, the blending of solid knowledge in each individual’s field of study and creative problem-solving skills is critical. While creativity remains an essential skill for leaders who strive to make a difference, the real challenge lies within developing the ability to think critically and act creatively.

The three challenges held in the event exposed participants to various efforts geared at promoting Internet connectivity, the theme of this year’s event. The first challenge placed teams in a technology summit in which they, as a technology startup, had to develop a business proposal to obtain governmental support. The second challenge pitted teams against each other in a parliamentary debate on the issue of Free Basics by Facebook, and the final challenge was to prepare a five-year plan to present to the board of directors of an internet service provider. Two seminars conducted by Mr David Chak, the founder of ArusAcademy and a fellow of Teach for Malaysia and Mr Samuel Kim, President and Founder of the Center for Asia Leadership helped prepare participants for the challenge.
